Fire them! Wait does it work?

Sold on Lies

At the Aspen Institute the Ford CEO Jim Farley suggested he was worried about the future of human vehicle operators as the use of autonomous systems removes them from what he described as an 'mastery event'. His worry extends to humans losing 'basic skills and awareness' but these ideas didn't seem to apply to his own teams who turn the gears of his company. Through recent years Ford has fired thousands of people which many sources attributed to changing technological landscape in particular the adoption of AI.

Today Ford is now paying the price like many other companies for firing employees and trying to integrate AI tools. At Ford it seems they thought AI meant plug and play with Charles Poon, VP of Vehicle Hardware Engineering quoted as saying

Mistakenly, we thought that by just introducing artificial intelligence and adjusting the design requirements that we had, that would produce a high-quality product”.

Perhaps for a thousand years its been established that developing a new system requires rigor, exploration of use cases and development of measurements but with AI and a trillion dollars on the table that seems to no longer be the case. Implement fast, ruin the lives of employees and then regret your decisions seems to be the reoccurring pattern. Ford and other companies aren't following these patterns accidently and despite their own influences they have been eaten up by the AI trend and its advocates.

Large language models have their place and with the full industrial might of the world behind them they will eventually create some kind of nourishment but at the price of peoples lives it will never be worth it.
