warmonger selling band aids

Today the AI literature detection company “Pangram” announced a partnership with substack that allows users of the publishing platform to select and scan content for signs of AI usage. This announcement has been received with critical acclaim from popular authors and opinion piece writers with some being quoted as to say its the most human first decision yet.

What the general audience has not noticed buried as the very last two headings in the substack documentation is that authors are free to simply disable this feature.

As though deception has not wrought its damage in the literature community enough already those offering mitigations and solutions have steeped themselves in it as well. Listening to the brief 30 minute podcast by the Pangram and Substack executives, their tone and general approach to the overall narrative leaves me feeling that this project was rushed and implemented more as a marketing tactic than a genuine effort to bring back integrity to the platform.

Almost ironically the CEO of substack at the beginning of the brief podcast can be quoted saying that substacks own AI video editing tools were a ‘good use’ of the technology a sentiment likely not shared by those employed in related sectors or those who have already been fired from large Hollywood studios under the guise of ‘technological changes’.

While substacks AI tools quietly hum and pangrams own servers dance to that same tune humans who seek out genuine connection with real content and writing are still left wondering when protecting them will matter.
